A good job description will even do some of the hiring work for you by encouraging candidates who arent a good fit for the job to self-select out of the process.Thats a big plus for time-strapped companies. As small-business owners, we dont necessarily have a big HR department that can run through 400 resumestime is money. The more clarity you have on the front end helps ease the entire process, says Mori Taheripour, principal at MT auf der ganzen welt Strategies, a business consulting group based in Washington, D.C., and a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School, where she teaches negotiation and conflict resolution.Use these steps to create job descriptions that attract people who will be as committed as you are to taking your business to the next level.Cover the Basics and in the Right OrderMuch like a menu, your job description needs to be simple and clear. This will increase the likelihood that job seekers will read it from top to bottom and come away with a clear understanding of the job. Include some mouth-watering details, and follow a logical format, starting with the job title and ending with a call to action. hiring experts recommend that you structure the information in the following order1. Job TitleAvoid made-up titles that include uncommon words which will negatively impact your jobs ranking in search results. That way you can have a sense of what your competitors are seeking.Bring Your Job to LifeAs you write your job description, keep your ideal applicant in mind. Provide enough information and description to help him or her visualize themselves in the position. The better you can articulate the desired characteristics an d experience you want, the more targeted potential candidates will be, Taheripour says. And that will help simplify and potentially shorten your recruiting process.Candidates want to know what they will do from day to day in your job. Why not feed their curiosity with detailed, colorful descriptions? Its important to be as accurate as possible about what the job will entail so the candidate can understand a day in the life, says Christina Boudreaux, owner and senior talent consultant at Talent Made Simple, an HR consulting firm in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Include information about who the position reports to, who they would work with daily, what tools they will be expected to use and what their output should be. If theres a training period, explain how long it will be and what it entails. And if youre looking for someone to wear multiple hats, note that as well. Sometimes with small or startup companies there is a lot that can fall into the other duties as assigned, Boudreaux says. That can be a plus for enterpreneurial-minded Millennials who are hungry to know how business works. If thats the case, be open about this opportunity to let interestedapplicants know that they need to be flexible and adaptable to succeed in this role, she says. Finally, as a small business, you may not be able to compete for talent with larger companies on pay so think about what aspects of your culture might be appealing to a candidate and talk about those in the job description. For example, if your management style is such that you give employees a lot of ownership of their work or you allow for a lot of flexibility in schedules, say so.Define Success at Your OrganizationYour company is a unique community of people and values. Be sure that your job description reflects those unique characteristics to help set seekers expectations, says Jodie Shaw, chief marketing officer at The Alternative Board, a peer advisory board service headquartered in Westminster, Colorado. As you start jo tting down the attributes of the job, Shaw recommends describing your ideal candidate, not just with the experience, education and skills they possess, but also with the behaviors they will need to fit into your culture. For instance, if your companys culture places a value on people who dont take themselves too seriously or have a work-hard/play-hard value, spell that out in the job description. To really make your job description shine, include some details about how the candidate can advance in six months to a year. If applicable, include specific metrics that the person in the role should accomplish, as well as information about potential growth opportunities for greater autonomy or leadership. This schrift of detail is likely to get the attention of career-driven Millennials and Gen Z job seekers and signals to them that your company promotes from within.Stay Ahead of the CompetitionAn engaging job description will go a long way to help you attract the talent you need to grow an d sustain your company, putting you ahead of the competition in your field. Why San Diego Tops Tech Hiring in 2018
Why San Diego Tops Tech Hiring in 2018Why San Diego Tops Tech Hiring in 2018Its been a transformational year for San Diegos tech market, says Kyle Houston, branch manager for here. Indeed, Californias southernmost metro area is poised to join its northerly neighbors like San Francisco and Los Angeles as a technology hub.San Diego placed first among U.S. cities for projected tech hiring in 2018 in the annual Technology IT Hiring Forecast and Local Trend Report. Considering these stats, its leid surprising that 29 percent of San Diego CIOs plan to add full-time technology professionals to their teams in early 2018 - an increase of 14 points from the opening months of 2017. Additionally, 51 percent intend to fill any vacant positions that arise to maintain current technology staff levels.Statewide, web developers, app developers, and systems analysts and managers are slated to be among the top 100 fastest growing occupations between 2014 and 2024.With all this moving and shaking going on, employers in and around San Diego need to know how to recruit skilled talent in a tight job market - and candidates should understand how to edge out the competition.Download our Salary Guide to find the starting salaries for more than 75 IT jobs in San DiegoDOWNLOAD THE SALARY GUIDESan Diegos most wanted tech skillsAs more businesses build a presence here, we expect continued demand for project and full-time professionals with skills in web development, DevOps and cybersecurity to support the growth of internet-based companies and the already strong startup market, says Houston.According to the hiring forecast, local employers in the San Diego job market will be keenest on the following skills in 2018Cybersecurity - This reflects growing concern about cyberattacks and the increasingly sophisticated ways in which hackers compromise corporate data, Houston says.Wireless network management - Hiring in this sector allows companies to keep up with the ever-increasing mobile workf orce and the additional flexibility employees require.Database management - Companies increasingly rely on competitive analytics, which must be protected and efficiently managed. In addition to these technical skills, employers look for candidates who can work with other team members across the organization. Interpersonal skills are becoming critical to technology operations as the interaction between IT and the business - chiefly marketing - becomes commonplace, Houston says. Regardless of the role, people skills and communication are key factors in hiring.Priorities, prioritiesOf the CIOs polled in San Diego, 26 percent said they plan to focus on the security of IT systems and protection of company information over the next six months. Other concerns includeUpgrading existing systems for business efficiency (21 percent)Innovation and helping to grow their businesses (21 percent)Technology innovation and investing in new technologies (17 percent)Staff retention (14 percent)Employe rs Be flexible and move fastA staggering 61 percent of local CIOs say its difficult to find skilled IT professionals in the San Diego job market. Houston cautions that a degree of flexibility may be required to meet hiring demands given the current market conditions. The reality is that companies are becoming very flexible in their willingness to take on people with varying experience levels because competition is so high, he says. Employers should be prepared to invest in additional training and plan to onboard candidates who dont yet meet all their ideal skill requirements.Companies must act quickly, too. Its no secret that the hiring process needs to be fast - yet efficient - these days, he says. Hiring managers and HR departments should work together to ensure they are on the same page regarding roles and responsibilities. Managers might also benefit from seeking budget approval before meeting with candidates to avoid wasting precious time in the recruitment process.Candidates Be honest and up frontWith the demand for IT professionals at a high level, skilled candidates may find themselves fielding multiple offers. In this situation, Houston recommends candidates examine their motivations. Whats most important? Better compensation? More flexibility? An easier commute? Understanding their biggest wants and needs helps job seekers effectively weigh their options. And keep in mind that hiring managers appreciate honesty. Candidates considering multiple offers should be up front with prospective employers. This doesnt mean you need to show all of your cards, Houston says, but you do need to let them know what you like or dislike about the job or the offer. In some cases, employers may adjust their offer to better suit the applicants needs. As always, candidates should give employers the courtesy of a phone call if they accept another position elsewhere.Ready to begin your search for skilled technology professionals or open IT positions in the San Diego job ma rket? The Benefits of Volunteering After Youve Been Laid Off
The Benefits of Volunteering After Youve Been Laid OffThe Benefits of Volunteering After Youve Been Laid OffLets say that you just lost your job due to a company layoff. Most likely, you want to start your job search as soon as possible so that you can find work again. But have you thought about volunteeringwhile youre unemployed? The benefits of volunteering after youve been laid off are numerous- and can help jumpstart your job search, too.In honor of National Volunteer Month, here are just a few of the benefits of volunteering after youve been laid offIt gives you purpose. Unless you hated your job, or knew it was coming, a layoff out of left field can leave you shaken and scared, unsure of the future. You might lose confidence in yourself and your abilities, and blame yourself for the layoff even if it was due to no fault of your own. So instead of dwelling on being laid off, volunteering can help you by thinking about things bigger than yourself. It can give you a reason to get up out of bed in the morning (because, lets face it, a layoff can be depressing), get dressed, and do something good. Its a way to help your community. Whether its volunteering at your local animal shelter and snuggling with all those puppies or helping to paint a mural in your local recreation center, doing good is always a good thing. You might have been so busy in your job that you didnt have time to volunteer, even though its always been in your heart to do so. Now is the time to channel all that energy into something positive, and by the laws of attraction, good things will surely flow your way, too.It can help you reassess your career goals. Before your layoff, you might have been so mired in the day-to-day of your job that you never really got to ask yourself if you really liked what you were doing. In this way, a layoff can be a blessing in disguise. Why? Well, most likely youll volunteer doing something that you like to do, be it volunteering at your childs school or for a n on-profit that youre passionate about. Tapping into that side of yourself can show you if you really want to continue on in your career- or not.You might find that the work that you do volunteering is something youd like to do for a job. If thats the case, then you should consider a career change, which can be a very exciting prospect indeedIt can add new skills to your resume. Volunteering is just like a job, except without the pay. But if you view volunteering as a job, then youll know that you can learn a lot from your gig. You might learn new skills such as fundraising, marketing, social media- the list goes on and on. These skills are a great way to flesh out your resume and make you even mora marketable as a potential job candidateIt can help close an employment gap. If your layoff was unexpected, chances are that you didnt have a second gig lined up to help pad your pocket. And a layoff can leave a big empty space on your resume- that is, unless you volunteer. As a volunteer, you can (and should) list your volunteering experience in the job section, because it counts as a job. Dont make a separate section for it or think of it just as a volunteer gig. Work is work, whether you get paid for it or not, and your volunteering job counts as just that, a job. And your job can help you handle a gap in your resume like a proIts a great way to network. Its important to network during your job search, so take advantage of the time you spend volunteering to create new connections and establish potential job leads. Let people know that you were laid off from your previous job (you dont have to go into the details if you dont want to), and then let them know what type of job youre looking for. And if youre volunteering in a new field, youll most likely be working alongside like-minded individuals who can offer fresh new contacts in your intended industryVolunteering is a wonderful way to make the most of your time after your layoff. Not only will it give you purpose , but it can help you get new education, skills, and who knows, maybe even your next job.Looking for even more help recovering from your layoff? partnered with LinkedIn Learning to create a whole course for you. 3 Reasons to Send Cover Letters When Its Not Required
3 Reasons to Send Cover Letters When Its Not Required3 Reasons to Send Cover Letters When Its Not RequiredMany job search advice blogs tell job seekers why titelblatt letters are dead and no one has the time to read them. In addition, job application forms do notlage always require cover letters when applying for work. However, cover letters can be a very good idea to send even when no one required it. We explain 3 reasons why you should do it for your next job application.3. Because no one else does itThe way to stand out to anyone is by trying something new to get someones attention. Merely doing what everyone else does shows you know how to follow. However, companies like leaders that try new things and think outside the box.The very fact that you are willing to read a job description, write a cover letter expressing your interest, and send it with your application (even when not required) shows that you are not afraid to let someone know what you want. It also shows you are willin g to make an extra effort most people do not while filling out dreaded online forms.Once again, barely anyone does it. In a recent job posting to hire staff at Find My Profession, only 4 job seekers submitted cover letters out of 100+ submissions (1 of the 4 was hired). So, you will stand out for doing it, mostly for the better.2. It shows off your communication skillsUnless you are making the mistake of recycling your cover letters, writing a cover letter when not required shows that you are the type of person to initiate a conversation when you see something you like. You are communicating through a cover letter that this job interests you so much so you will take the time and write about it. Job seekers who do such a thing are showing that they know how to communicate directly when they want something, without passive actions.Important If your cover letter displays that you communicate poorly, do not proofread, or fail to get to the point, the cover letter works against you. Anyon e who writes a cover letter should always edit and proofread it before sending. Errors in your cover letter hurt your chances of getting job bewerberinterviews.1. It shows passion and personalityIt is true that there are job candidates who have landed work mainly because of the way they write. Resumes with a track record of experience show your success. But a hiring manager will get a better idea of your personality if you possess strong writing skills for conveying your passion. As the hiring manager views your resume, they may be thinking, This looks impressive. A cover letter alongside it with your personality in writing will explain to the hiring manager, I see why they were able to achieve such impressive results. Look at the way he/she communicates. The cover letter will ultimately be a topic of discussion in your job interview if written so well that it was the main reason you were interviewed, to begin with. Even though we live in a digital age of texting, blogging, and speech -to-text, things like writing skills that motivate others to succeed have not gone out of style.

Survey Women claim half as much on expense reports as menSurvey Women claim half as much on expense reports as menLadies, remember to claim your expenses When employers require employees to pay expenses first and claim them later, a new U.K. survey found that these expense reports end up costing women mora than men.Commissioned by Allstar, the survey of 2,001 U.K. employees found that employees let their embarrassment and forgetfulness stop them from getting back money that is rightfully theirs. One in four workers said they would rather let their work get affected than have to deal with an expense, choosing to postpone or cancel meetings to avoid paying a cost upfront. In fact, nearly half of employees over 55 years old said they never pay or claim an expense.Survey Women dont claim expenses as often as menOverall, more than one-third of employees said they forgot to claim their expenses for fuel, travel or entertaining clients. But women were more likely than men to avoid claiming an expense, and what they did end up claiming ended up being half as much as what men would claim. Facts dont change peoples minds. Heres what does.
Facts donât change peopleâs minds. Hereâs what does. Facts donât change peopleâs minds. Hereâs what does. If you had asked me this question â" How do you change a mind? â" two years ago, I would have given you a different answer. As a former scientist, I would have cautioned you to rely on objective facts and statistics. Develop a strong case for your side, back it up with hard, cold, irrefutable data, and voila!Drowning the other person with facts, I assumed, was the best way to prove that global warming is real, the war on drugs has failed, or the current business strategy adopted by your risk-averse boss with zero imagination is not working.Since then, Iâve discovered a significant problem with this approach. It doesnât work. The mind doesnât follow the facts. Facts, as John Adams put it, are stubborn things, but our minds are even more stubborn. Doubt isnât always resolved in the face of facts for even the most enlightened among us, however credible and convincing those facts might be.As a result of the well-documented confirmation bias, we tend to undervalue evidence that con tradicts our beliefs and overvalue evidence that confirms them. We filter out inconvenient truths and arguments on the opposing side. As a result, our opinions solidify, and it becomes increasingly harder to disrupt established patterns of thinking. We believe in alternative facts if they support our pre-existing beliefs. Aggressively mediocre corporate executives remain in office because we interpret the evidence to confirm the accuracy of our initial hiring decision. Doctors continue to preach the ills of dietary fat despite emerging research to the contrary. If you have any doubts about the power of the confirmation bias, think back to the last time you Googled a question. Did you meticulously read each link to get a broad objective picture? Or did you simply skim through the links looking for the page that confirms what you already believed was true? And letâs face it, youâll always find that page, especially if youâre willing to click through to Page 12 on the Google search results. If facts donât work, how do you change a mind â" whether itâs your own or your neighborâs?Give the mind an outWeâre reluctant to acknowledge mistakes. To avoid admitting we were wrong, weâll twist ourselves into positions that even seasoned yogis canât hold. The key is to trick the mind by giving it an excuse. Convince your own mind (or your friend) that your prior decision or prior belief was the right one given what you knew, but now that the underlying facts have changed, so should the mind. But instead of giving the mind an out, we often go for a punch to the gut. We belittle the other person (âI told you soâ). We ostracize (âBasket of deplorablesâ). We ridicule (âWhat an idiotâ).Schadenfreude might be your favorite pastime, but it has the counterproductive effect of activating the other personâs defenses and solidifying their positions. The moment you belittle the mind for believing in something, youâve lost the battle. At that point, the min d will dig in rather than give in. Once youâve equated someoneâs beliefs with idiocracy, changing that personâs mind will require nothing short of an admission that they are unintelligent. And thatâs an admission that most minds arenât willing to make.Democrats in the United States are already falling into this trap. Theyâre not going to win the 2020 presidential elections by convincing Donald Trump supporters that they were wrong to vote for him last November or that theyâre responsible for his failures in office. Instead, as author and psychology professor Robert Cialdini explains, Democrats must offer Trump supporters a way to get out of their prior commitment while saving face: âWell, of course you were in a position to make that decision in November because no one knew about X.âColombians adopted a similar strategy in the 1950s when the Rojas dictatorship collapsed. As I explain in my forthcoming book, although the Colombian military was complicit in the abuse s of the Rojas regime, civilians deftly avoided pointing any fingers at the military. Instead, they managed to march the military back to the barracks with its dignity intact. They recognized that they would need the militaryâs cooperation both during the transition process and in its aftermath. So they offered an alternative narrative for public consumption that uncoupled the armed forces from the Rojas regime. In this narrative, which the military leaders found much easier to swallow, it was the âpresidential familyâ and a few corrupt civilians close to Rojas - not military officers - who were responsible for the regimeâs excesses. Were they to take a different approach, a military dictatorship- not democracy- may have resulted.Your beliefs are not you.In my early years in academia, I would tend to get defensive when someone challenged one of my arguments during a presentation. My heart rate would skyrocket, I would tense up, and my answer would reflect the disdain with which I viewed the antagonistic question (and the questioner).I know Iâm not alone here. We all tend to identify with our beliefs and arguments. This is my business. This is my article. This is my idea. But hereâs the problem. When your beliefs are entwined with your identity, changing your mind means changing your identity. Thatâs a really hard sell.A possible solution, and one that Iâve adopted in my own life, is to put a healthy separation between you and the products of you. I changed my vocabulary to reflect this mental shift. At conferences, instead of saying, âIn this paper, I argue â¦,â I began to say âThis paper argues ⦠âThis subtle verbal tweak tricked my mind into thinking that my arguments and me were not one and the same. Obviously, I was the one who came up with these arguments, but once they were out of my body, they took a life of their own. They became separate, abstract objects that I could view with some objectivity. It was no longer personal. It wa s simply a hypothesis proven wrong.Build up your empathy musclePlaying Al Goreâs Inconvenient Truth on repeat to a room of Detroit auto workers wonât change their mind on global warming if theyâre convinced your agenda will put them out of a job.Humans operate on different frequencies. If someone disagrees with you, itâs not because theyâre wrong, and youâre right. Itâs because they believe something that you donât believe. The challenge is to figure out what that thing is and adjust your frequency. If employment is the primary concern of the Detroit auto worker, showing him images of endangered penguins (as adorable as they may be) or Antarcticaâs melting glaciers will get you nowhere. Instead, show him how renewable energy will provide job security to his grandchildren. Now, youâve got his attention.Get out of your echo chamber. We live in a perpetual echo chamber. We friend people like us on Facebook. We follow people like us on Twitter. We read the news outlets that are on the same political frequency as us.This means our opinions arenât being stress tested nearly as frequently as they should.Make a point to befriend people who disagree with you. Expose yourself to environments where your opinions can be challenged, as uncomfortable and awkward as that might be.Marc Andreessen has a saying that I love: âStrong beliefs, loosely held.â Strongly believe in an idea, but be willing to change your opinion if the facts show otherwise.Ask yourself, âWhat fact would change one of my strongly held opinions?â If the answer is âno fact would change my opinion,â youâre in trouble. A person who is unwilling to change his or her mind even with an underlying change in the facts is, by definition, a fundamentalist. In the end, it takes courage and determination to see the truth instead of the convenient. But itâs well worth the effort.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author. Relocating Tips for Proactive Job Seekers
Relocating Tips for Proactive Job Seekers Relocating Tips for Proactive Job Seekers Relocating Tips for Proactive Job Seekers Looking for a job is never an easy task; this is particularly true during hiring freezes in a bad economy. The news may report a growing job market, but many of those positions are concentrated in specific regions, causing job seekers to consider relocating for a job. While some people are able to chase their dream job, others are forced to wait out the current environment, hoping for a fast recovery. For those willing and able to relocate for a job, the task of relocation is a little different than most job searches. Finding a job in the new city and preparing for the move itself are only a part of the delicate planning and preparation that goes into relocating for a job. Here are a few relocating tips for proactive job seekers. [TWEET] Step 1: Searching for a new location. First determine if relocating for a job is a viable option for you. Ask yourself if you're able to afford moving to a new city. Moving costs alone could be more than $1,000. Are you willing to move away from family, friends and close networks? Are there health concerns or family issues to consider? Once you have considered all your options and weighed the pros and cons, start making plans. Start searching for a new job. Treat the job search in the same way you would if you were looking for local opportunities. Research each new company before you apply. Look for information about salary, benefits and company environment. Don't forget to check on relocation assistance. Companies may not advertise relocation help; this shouldn't dissuade you from asking about it. Use reputable research sites. Don't limit your research to company provided information. Online descriptions and company statements are often marketing material designed to present the company in a positive light. Online job review sites provide more in-depth knowledge about the company. Glassdoor and CareerBliss provide employee-generated reviews. Once you have an interview set up in a new city, recon the area before making a decision. Relocating for a job and choosing the best company is no good if you end up hating your new city. Use a relocation research company like RelocationScout. Hotpads also allows users to search for rentals and properties for sale at the same time. Trulia provides homes for sale listings from across the nation. Never purchase a home, rent an apartment or accept a job offer in a foreign location without checking it out first. Set up a trip to view the lay of the land and a check out your potential new office during your interview. A quick three-day scouting event will provide more information than online listings and marketing material. Plan for your trip in advance. Divide your three-day trip into three search plans job, home and community. Don't forget to follow-up with the hiring manager. Being polite goes a long way. After visiting your potential new city and employer, immediately send a thank you note. Make sure to mention aspects of the company you liked, reiterate some conversational topics and note something you learning on the trip. Check back with the hiring manager within ten days. Your follow-up letter should reiterate your interest in the job, why you think this is a good fit and why you're interested in their company. Don't regurgitate your cover letter or simply use mushy, filler language. Sincerity often is welcome, while insincerity often is dismissed. Step 2: Get ready for the big move. Don't expect the company to move you into your new home. Relocation packages are uncommon in the current job market. Companies rarely offer assistance unless the job requires talent not currently available in the area or they are seeking candidates. However, it's appropriate to ask the hiring manager if they offer any assistance with relocating for a job. Just wait until you secure the job to ask. Military veterans and the spouses have other options. The Relocation Assistance Program (RAP) helps retired military and their families relocate to a new job. Keep family top of mind. Making the big move is stressful on everyone, especially family members. If you have kids, engage with them and ask them to help with the process. Children never want to change schools or lose friends. Encouraging them to help look at new schools in the new city goes a long way. Talk to them about new designs for their bedroom, fun activities in the area or a new hobbies. Help them feel excited and a part of the big move. Don't neglect them and make them feel left out of the decisions. Start early and never wait until the last moment. Give yourself plenty of wiggle room preparing for the big event. If possible, schedule the actual moving day at least two weeks before your first day at work. This gives you plenty of time to transfer medical records, enroll your child in the new school and orchestrate other necessities. Remember Murphy's Law if something can go wrong, it usually will. Giving yourself valuable extra time helps prevent those unforeseen situations from devastating the relocation process. Make a checklist. Before relocating for a job, create a checklist of things that need to be done on the day of the move and the following weeks. For future events, try to create a tentative schedule. This helps you to prevent missing important items on the list. Some items to remember include: Schedule electricity and/or gas connection. Plan a date to have TV, phone and Internet services connected. Discontinue newspaper delivery, trash pickup and recycling services. Forward your mail and ask friends or family to check your box. Change your vehicle tags and transfer your driver's license. Relocation tools. Preparation is key to making relocating for a job smoother and less stressful. Several online tools are available to help you adjust. Money concerns probably are causing you to worry. CareerPerfect offers online cost of living calculators and salary estimates for each region. Use this to determine if your new salary is fair and covers cost of living in the new area. Their budgeting tools helps you determine if your salary or loss of revenue will help or hurt the family's finances. The move itself sometimes feels overwhelming. Move.com features a wealth of moving related tools to help eliminate stress and remember easy to forget tasks to complete. 6 things you should do when traveling for a job interview
6 things you should do when traveling for a job interview 6 things you should do when traveling for a job interview You scored that big, out-of-town interview! Now, you just have to take a plane, train or a car to get there. Here are six things to do when you have to go to an unfamiliar place for an interview.Know exactly where youâre going in advanceItâs definitely smart to go to your interview location beforehand - especially if you get to the area at least a day before. Youâll be glad you did. This will save you some of the stress that comes with heading to a new location on an already high-stakes day.Just donât forget to leave with much more time than you need on the day of the actual interview. You never know what the traffic conditions will actually be like at that time of day.Find a breakfast spot and a convenience storeYou might not have time for a sit-down breakfast - white tablecloth and all - on the morning of your interview. Chances are youâll want to head to a local Starbucks or another coffee shop for a quick bite and a drink, so make sure you find a place to pick up so mething if you donât have a lot of time to eat before meeting your potential employer. But what if you spill coffee or a little bit of breakfast on your shirt at breakfast? Itâd be good to know where to pick up some stain remover. While youâre at a convenience store nearby, you can also pick up a few snacks and water, which will come in handy if you have a day full of interview sessions or panels.Have comfortable clothing options - and a portable chargerIf you plan on wearing heels to the interview, it canât hurt to have a more comfortable pair of shoes in your bag, just in case. You donât want to show up to the interview and already be in pain from wearing them on the way there. Or, you could just invest in shoes that are better for walking, but still interview-appropriate.Also, bring along a portable cell phone charger in case you donât end up near an outlet anytime.Find out who will be interviewing you beforehandAsk the employer to let you who youâll be meeting with , whether itâs a recruiter, manager, or someone else from the team with the position you applied for. Youâll be prepared for whatever comes your way, and maybe even more of an idea how the questions will be framed. This might even help ease your fear of the unknown.Make sure you know all about the companyThis is standard - you should be prepared for every job interview, whether or not itâs in your neck of the woods - but if you get ahead on your research before you leave for your trip, youâll probably feel a lot better once you get there. This way, you can just add to what you know before interview time rolls around.Come with questions for the interviewerDid you see something that caught your eye on the company website, like an initiative you think youâd might like to get involved in, or recent research they carried out? Ask about it. You never know where it might lead.Youâll also prove that you are interested in the company, and that you can already see yourself fitting into the culture there.

How to Get a Good Work Reputation - The Muse
How to Get a Good Work Reputation - The Muse How to Get a Good Work Reputation So much of advancing in your career has to do with making the right impression- with the people on your team, in your network, and inter-departmentally, too. That means, to some degree, performing well at work is all about getting noticed. For many people, the way to accomplish that is to work late each day in order to demonstrate just how hardworking and dedicated you really are. As long as youâre not rushing out at 5 PM, youâll develop the reputation for being a reliable, loyal employeeâ¦right? I recently spoke over the phone with Mercedes De Luca, the COO of Basecamp, to get her insight on how people fall into this trap of working longer and longer hours for just that reason. As an employer and manager whoâs committed to her employeesâ well beings, De Luca especially wanted to explain the value of not working overtime as a company perk in itself. According to her, âPeople do feel that if theyâre working long hours, theyâre working hard. But those two are not synonymous. The first thing is breaking that mindset.â And there are simple ways to do just that. Long Hours Alone Arenât Enough If you consider yourself a hard worker, you know what never really clocking out feels like. Youâre constantly plugged into your email, or worse, you might even notice that work stuff starts infiltrating your me-time. To be honest, unless you set a hard and fast boundary for yourself, youâre the one to blame when it comes to working more than youâd like. âA lot of it is self-imposed,â De Luca explains. âEven if you have a boss that says âDonât work too late,â I think a lot of people still confuse or still equate working long hours, being the last to leave the office, responding to emails at 11 PM, and so on, with being noticeable.â I know it might be hard to imagine how you could possibly get the same amount of stuff done in less time, simply because youâve settled into a routine that has you believing you canât possibly leave at 5 or 6 PM. But really challenge yourself to notice when youâre staying late as a work necessity, and when youâre doing so for face time alone. Part of the problem could be that youâve simply adjusted to the work load and work pace involved with regularly staying late- essentially, you space your work out so that accomplishing everything on your to-do list takes you into the night. De Luca says itâs easier to notice those gaps once you start looking for them. Be aware of whether youâre spending your time meaningfully at work (especially around that afternoon slump or during those big meetings). If you think your time and energy could be better distributed, donât be shy about bringing that up to your manager, especially if that will lead to better results for your work or even your company as a whole. Make Clear Definitions for Success This can look like a daily to-do list of actionable goals as well as more solid ones for your particular role by week, month, quarter, and so on. If you have concrete progress to point to, you can start establishing, little by little, a culture of meaningful and guilt-free productivity. We all know what itâs like to stay late because we feel a certain pressure to. But De Luca makes an extremely important point here: âStaying late- you canât put that on your resume.â Iâll let that sink in for a minute. Your long hours- theyâre not going to necessarily propel you forward in your career if thatâs all you have to show for what youâve done in your position. âWhatâs going to matter,â she says, âis your accomplishments and whether or not they help the company go forward.â That means defining success clearly for yourself, for your peers, and for your boss. One foolproof way to do that is to really use data and numbers to your advantage. Really understand what constitutes a fine day and a productive one. De Luca says, for example, âIf your role is to produce X number of articles or get Y number of engagement or drive Z revenue, I think what you want to do is be able to point to that success. You can say, âYeah, I left at 5 PM, but thatâs because I achieved the goal that I set out to do.ââ Itâs a powerful and freeing thing to say youâve accomplished what you said you would- and if that takes you less time than you thought, youâre allowed to own that. One thing to be careful of when it comes to this strategy: Donât assume the work will speak for itself. Be your own advocate in building your reputation- otherwise people might assume youâre only doing the bare minimum. âYou may have to share that youâre on track and working towards your results and reinforcing them,â De Luca says, âBut if people say, âWe want you to help grow the X customers we have,â and you say to them âToday, we got 50 new customers,â thatâs more impressive than answering all your emails and attending all your meetings.â Results help you get noticed- not long hours in and of itself. I know, especially in a work culture where people stay late, it can be almost shameful to be the only person clocking out right at âearlyâ a couple times a week. âItâs a matter of reinforcing what you know to be valuable to the business,â De Luca explains. âBe comfortable with being noticed by sharing the progress against the results that you agreed to.â And as long as you can point to your progress, thereâs no point in staying late for appearances. Let yourself call it a day- youâve earned it.

Almost one-quarter of people oversleep at least once a week
Almost one-quarter of people oversleep at least once a week Almost one-quarter of people oversleep at least once a week With all of the gadgets and technology surrounding us at every moment, itâs a wonder we can get any sleep at all, but a surprising amount of people still manage to oversleep. According to a new study from Mattress-Inquirer of over 1,000 people, 55% of people oversleep at least once a week and 75% of those have missed work.A little over 30% said they oversleep once a week and 24% do it multiple times a week. As for which generation does the most oversleeping it is Gen Z for the win as 36% of them oversleep multiple times a week followed by Millennials at 25%, Gen X at 20% and Baby Boomers at 12%. Of course, keep in mind that Gen Z includes people born from 1998 to 2017 which means a great chunk of their day is devoted to naps (and we arenât just talking about college students.)You snooze, you loseInterestingly our wonderful smartphones, which we canât live without have trouble doing one of the main things they are supposed to do. The survey found that 1 in 4 people who used a smartphone to wake up tended to oversleep then those who didnât use a physical alarm clock. Nearly 1 in 3 people âalwaysâ snooze their smartphone alarms. A significant number of people also reported that they had no consistent method of waking up. They just rely on their inner alarm clock. However, these people woke up an average of seven minutes later than those who used a smartphone. As for the ramifications of sleeping late, they arenât very good. It found that 27% of women who overslept felt anxious about being rushed, while it was only 15% for men. However, 11% of men worried they would miss out on an opportunity if they overslept while only 10% of women did. Take a look at some of the other consequences of pressing snooze. And these were the top reasons people overslept.

Seize Unique Hiring Opportunities During The Holidays
Seize Unique Hiring Opportunities During The Holidays Seize Unique Hiring Opportunities During The Holidays âTis the season to lean in and engage top talent! Getting ready to rest your chin in your hand and count the hours until you can productively hire in the New Year? Donât start things off with a backlog of positions that need to be filled. Just as you still have open positions, candidates looking for their next opportunity still need to move forward in their job searches. Many do not want or cannot afford to lose six weeks during the holiday season. Talented professionals are always interested in exploring great companies and competitive opportunities. They are coached to take advantage of all the chances to network during the holidays. You can be a part of that effort! Consider the following tips for finding your best-fit candidates before the ball drops: Lean forward when others are leaning back Job seekers may worry that recruiters and hiring managers will be scarce during the holidays, and their concerns are justified. Be available during this time for networking conversations and interviews, and take advantage of the less crowded playground. This behavior also reinforces a strong workplace brand, as you show how you value connecting with interested candidates. Capture these opportunities to engage talent while visions of sugarplums distract your competition. Cultivate your talent pool Even though you are ready to close the deal with new prospects, the decision to hire usually takes a village. If members of your hiring team are not as available to make hiring decisions, you can still woo talent. Just as it is with figgy pudding, a little goes a long way. Be responsive when candidates inquire about the status of positions, even when you do not have a detailed update. Offer to speak with professionals interested in your company whether or not their ideal job is on the table. Create an open position on your career site that invites these candidates to generate a profile. Vet the incoming materials, and reach out to learn more about these candidates. Though certain job requisitions might be on hold until January, you have the benefit of predicting the future. Use the holidays to develop relationships with your January hires. Consider the candidateâs perspective Remember that as many offices dim their lights and people take vacations, your interested candidates may have an easier time getting away from their desks to come speak with you. Their workload may be lighter, and in that case, they have less stress to manage when excusing themselves from their current employer. Take the opportunity to meet with them during this time. The holidays do not have to be a loss in your hiring efforts. Keep your momentum going and ring in the New Year with new candidate relationships and ready-hire talent!
